What is 1970s style?
If the 60s were synonymous with assumed sexuality, all marked by the reign of the mini-skirt, the decade that followed it was placed under the sign of emancipation. As the Vietnam War rages on and the oil shocks of 1973 and 1979 plunge the West into economic crisis, the new generations aspire to more lightness and carefreeness. A state of mind that is quickly seen through the new codes of fashion. Women do not hesitate to put on the men's suit or pantsuit with an oversized cut giving them the look of flappers. Driven by a pacifist impulse, inherited by the baba cool movement, women adopted the bohemian style where long dresses with floral prints mingled with the transparent fabric of blouses leaving no room for modesty.
Today, the seventies influence remains intact and continues to inspire the designers of the greatest haute couture houses. During the spring-summer 2020 fashion week, for example, Hedi Slimane (artistic director of Celine) breathed new life into the neo-bourgeois with her retro and feminine codes. From the total denim look to the long folk dress to the suede jacket, this style enthroned by women has never been more relevant than it is today.
