Alcohol, hormones and perfumes

Alcohol consumption can increase attractiveness, by slightly altering body temperature and certain compounds released by the skin.
Hormonal variations (menstrual cycle, pregnancy, hormonal changes) can also influence body odor. As for perfumes and scented treatments, especially floral or fruity, they can imitate scents that are naturally attractive to mosquitoes.
Genetics, the key factor
The most frustrating part? Genetics. The researchers estimate that between 60% and 70% of mosquito attractiveness is determined by DNA. In other words, some people are literally born more "appetizing" than others.
In other words, mosquitoes bite you more than others not because they are relentless, but because your body ticks more boxes.
How to limit bites on a daily basis
Even if you can't change your biology, you can reduce the risks:
- use a suitable repellent,
- wear light-coloured and covering clothing,
- avoid the outdoors at dawn and dusk,
- Eliminate standing water near your home.
Understanding why mosquitoes prefer you allows you to take the guilt out of it: it's not personal, it's simply your body that speaks... a little too strong for them, and learning to avoid mosquito bites then becomes easier.
