Why were we thinner in the 70s?

Why did people look thinner in the 70s? Simpler eating, more active life, fewer screens and less stress: the lifestyle of the time largely explains this difference. Some habits of yesterday could inspire us today.

We often look at old photos from the 70s with a certain surprise: the silhouettes seem thinner, more natural, as if everyone was in shape without having a particular diet. So inevitably, one question often comes up: why were people thinner before? Was it the food, the lifestyle, or just an impression? In fact, several habits of the time explain this difference, and some could even inspire us today.

A simpler and more natural diet

In the 70s, most meals were cooked at home. We ate seasonal vegetables, simple dishes, soups, meat, fish, bread, rice or pasta. Industrial ready meals existed, but they were much less present than they are today.

There were also far fewer processed products, industrial biscuits, sodas or snacks. Eating was done at the table, at fixed times, and snacking was much rarer. As a result, without necessarily paying attention, people had a more balanced and natural diet.

Another important difference: the portions were generally smaller than today, especially in restaurants.
